“Vultos III came out of the same recording sessions as Vultos I and II. These three albums are then triplets’ brothers born of the same pregnancy. The story has been told before for Vultos I and II. They had no experience of recording and mixing. The “studio” was a very simple home studio. The objective of the recording was initially not to make albums, but to use the studio as a composing tool. And they had an urgency to finish recording (they hate recording), to go back to playing and composing, because that’s what they really like.
In Vultos I, II and III, given they inexperience, they often did all instruments parts in one take from start to end and if they did a mistake, they would delete the take, repeat the whole take until they were satisfied. So, there are no surviving alternative takes for these albums. When they came to the mixing, they realized that some of the parts were recorded too low, and this created problems for the mixing. Having also no knowledge of midi, the drum machine was not synchronized with the DAW. The recording of the drum machine was done manually by pressing the pattern button for the different drum parts. Only from Vultos VII the drum machine started to be synchronized with the DAW. An interesting detail about the mixing is that they don’t use overdubs, so the recordings have a live/raw feeling.
And the songs in Vultos III? They sing: “what is this longing?”. They sing: “you are a star; I am a supernova”. They sing: “Is this pain or desire to live?” inspired by Abel’s traumatized childhood memories of the grunt of pigs when led to slaughter.” — Artur M. Salgueiro
