History

Ethereal Sound Works (ESW) is an independent Portuguese label founded on January 6th, 2003, with a clear purpose: to support and amplify the voices of Portuguese rock and metal bands, helping them bring their music to the world.

Our first major initiative, the Garage Days Are Over campaign in 2003, marked the beginning of that mission. Through this effort, ESW connected with four promising bands — Fear Thy Name, Love Lies Eternal, Secrecy, and She’s a Dove. Although only two would ultimately sign with the label and release their records through ESW, this campaign laid the foundation for our identity: discovering emerging talent, nurturing it, and believing in what it could become.

In 2011, three of the four founders stepped away from the label due to professional and time constraints, transforming ESW into a one‑man operation. Despite their departure from daily responsibilities, their connection to the label never disappeared. To this day, ESW continues to collaborate with them as trusted consultants on specific projects, keeping the spirit of the original team very much alive.

In 2014, ESW partnered with iMusicianDigital to bring its catalog into the digital era, making all releases available across major online platforms. Due to legal limitations, some bands were unable to see their work published digitally, but this shift marked an important milestone for the label. From that point forward, all future contracts included digital distribution whenever possible, ensuring that new releases could reach listeners worldwide.

To counter the decline in musical activity and to support bands during the COVID‑19 pandemic, ESW launched Revista Lusitânia, a printed and digital magazine dedicated to the Portuguese music scene. Active from 2020 to 2022, the magazine published 24 monthly issues, offering artists a platform to stay connected with their audience during one of the most challenging periods for the creative community.

In 2023, ESW released its first vinyl record, Staring Down on Incandescent Cities by Soundscapism Inc. This milestone not only marked a new chapter for the label but also opened the door to a broader range of services. It represented ESW’s continuity to physical formats, along with the expansion to other ways artists can share their music with devoted listeners.

Two years later, ESW continued to broaden its offerings by releasing its first tape, further diversifying the ways artists could share their music. Together, these milestones strengthened ESW’s dedication to embracing new possibilities in physical media while honoring its roots.

From its earliest days, ESW envisioned expanding beyond music into the world of publishing. That long‑held ambition finally came to life in 2025 with the release of 101 Décimas, a poetry book by Manuel António João. This milestone marked the beginning of a new creative chapter for the label, honoring literature with the same dedication that has always guided its work in music.

Although ESW had long been involved in promoting and supporting live performances for its bands, it was only in 2025 that the label officially became a registered promoter. This step formalized years of grassroots effort, allowing ESW to expand its role in the live music scene and strengthen its commitment to helping artists reach new audiences on stage.

In 2026, ESW launched the Spectral Works division to meet the growing demand for digital distribution services among artists whose music fell outside the traditional rock and metal spectrum. This new branch was created to support less mainstream genres and experimental projects, extending ESW’s mission to a broader creative community. Os Vultos became the first band to join Spectral Works, marking the beginning of this expanded vision.

Since 2003, ESW has collaborated with more than 50 bands, projects, and artists — many of them on a regular, long‑term basis. These ongoing relationships reflect the label’s commitment to supporting creative journeys, fostering growth, and standing beside artists throughout their evolution.
