“Vultos II was recorded simultaneously with Vultos I and Vultos III in just two months in 2006, May and June. Vultos had spent 2005 and 2006 in constant rehearsals where song after song sprouted. Or rather, song ideas; they lacked form, something they didn’t manage to achieve in rehearsals because they always indulged in long improvisations. The initial purpose was then not to record an album, but to use the studio as a composition tool, to turn chaos into order. They then began to set up “Pus Studios” in the kollektiv where they lived (inspired by the Wümme Studio, in a miniature amateur-home version, since Vultos didn’t live in a farm nor had a generous money advance from a major label).
The recording process was very quick. There was an emergency to be finished with recording and move forward to new songs, to compose and play, which is what they like to do. They hate recording. However, by June of that year they realized that the recording sessions could be used for something more than just composition.
The most challenging for the recording were the vocals. On the one hand, Abel had no singing experience, and he was still searching for his style. On the other hand, recording vocals at home has many difficulties: how to not disturb the neighbors (night recording was out of question), and how to not to be “disturbed” by neighbors’ noise? This forced them to record vocal parts very fast usually in one-hour sessions. They could obviously, for convenience, become just an instrumental band but they also had something to say.
So Vultos fell silent, rose high, played, danced, and sang their fado: “what a world we build, and in this way, we destroy it. It’s insane! It’s insane!” “Pain comforts the pain”, and “life is a double edge-knife”. — Artur M. Salgueiro
