1 review for Os Vultos – Vultos I – Para lá dos montes, para lá do horizonte

  1. admin –

“Vultos I wasn’t meant to be an album. The same goes for Vultos II and Vultos III. The songs for these three albums emerged from sessions at AKKS in Bergen (located in USF-Verftet) in the distant year of 2005. Vultos had just formed around the core of Abel, Jens, Greta, and Per. In the early sessions, they invited some drummers to try it out, but things weren’t flowing. They needed a drummer / percussionist of the Alasdair Malloy, Bill Rieflin, or Roli Mosimann type, someone less conventional. They couldn’t find one.

Until they experimented with an electronic drum machine… And suddenly everything fell into place and they realized that they had to use a machinist à la Doctor Avalanche. It may seem strange, but the mechanical, cerebral, and non-human precision of a machine gave them the freedom to create. Sometimes they would randomly program a beat, following the I-Ching’s principles or Eno’s oblique strategies, and start improvising over it without having to worry about creating distinct parts for the drummer to follow. It must sound familiar to many bands: how many times does that part come before the chorus? With the drum machine, that ceased to be a concern in the composition phase; it was a matter of letting the machine run ad infinitum, if necessary, and just playing.

In the end, the drum machine also gave them the freedom to record… If they had a drummer, they would have had to resort to a professional studio, with the added burden of cost and time. The drum machine allowed them to start recording at their kollektiv, where the four of them lived together at the time without disturbing the neighbors. And it was at the kollektiv that they set up their own home studio, which after they baptized Pus Studios (yes, they considered their music leukocytes resulting from inflammation, inflammation of life, of existence…)

The working method was simple: composition in the AKKS rehearsal rooms, recording at home. The recordings initially had some comical situations because none of them had any recording experience. One of these situations was right at the beginning when Jens, on a sleepless night, pressed the record button without using the electronic drums or the metronome. The day after breakfast he announced to the others: “I recorded the guitar parts for Volúpia!” Of course, it was all out of tempo, as any musician would know, and nothing could be used further.

But they weren’t musicians… But even so, in the end they managed to record Vultos I. As a Portuguese saying goes, ” If you don’t have a dog, you hunt with a cat”, or in Os Vultos’ version, “on a goat’s path, be a goat.” This is the string theory of Os Vultos.” — Artur M. Salgueiro
