1 review for Os Vultos – Umas cruzes pesam mais que outras

“After the recording of Vultos I-III, Vultos thought “and now what”? They shared the recordings with some friends but were mostly ignored. Still, they decided to go on. And they really did go on, in isolation, in solitude. In a way their music is a product of being outcasts…

But they had each other at least. Zappa didn’t eat to play and record, but Vultos did spend time cooking dinner every day, an imposition of Abel to follow his Mediterranean tradition. The others, with a Norwegian culture, could well skip dinner. While everything between them was democratic, food was out of the democratic process.

Abel would prefer to skip the evening recording sessions after dinner to read a book and listen to records. But Greta, the Viking girl, would say, “we can because we must”, following the Kantian imperative. Abel preferred Kierkegaard (literally church garden), which in the Scandinavian languages is also the word for graveyard. Of these discussions in the summer of 2006 emerged the first musical transition in their recording career mirrored in this EP, longer songs with more improvisation (like they did in the rehearsal sessions) and the introduction of instrumentals. And the lyrics? “It’s the era of Kalki”, from the Vaishnava cosmology, the age of individualism, vanity, narcissism, selfishness, and egocentrism.” — Artur M. Salgueiro
